The Shut-Show Will Continue! (?)

“K-Pasta, amoebas!”

Negotiations over border security ran into a wall (see what I did there?)  over the weekend, and raises the possibility of a partial government shutdown by Friday. Hair Füror’s demand for $5.7 billion for a wall isn’t even on the table any more.

Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Richard Shelby (R-AL) said that the chances of a deal are now only 50-50.

Axios’ Jonathon Swan email thingie tells us (weird bullets and idiosyncratic emboldening is theirs):

Bipartisan negotiations to strike a border security deal and to keep the federal government open have broken down over the past 24 hours.

  • “Negotiations reached an impasse on Saturday, primarily over detention beds and interior enforcement, according to four sources familiar with the talks,” Politico reports.
  • “Democratic negotiators offered a deal to their Republican counterparts, but Republicans are refusing to negotiate until Democrats take back their demand for a cap on the number of beds used for undocumented immigrants who have committed crimes, two of the sources said.”

What’s next? Very unclear. If the talks are dead, Trump is so dug in he has only two options: shut down the government again or use his emergency powers to get the money.

  • Our thought bubble: Both options are horrible. The first would herald a return to chaos, depleted government services and federal workers being deprived of pay. The second would mean an instant court fight and a backlash from Congress.

[Star Wars-style scroll, please…] Meanshile, 3,000 miles away from Prznint Stupid,  California Gov. Gavin Newsom is expected to order the removal of roughly 360 National Guard members from the state’s border with Mexico and redirect them to fight drug trafficking and focus on Finland-style Forest Raking wildfire prevention.

New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham last week ordered the removal of most her state’s troops before the SOTU, and that left a mark.

In other words, the National Emergency isn’t much of an emergency if the gubnors of two border states are pulling away the Guard. See you in court, Hair Füror!

Tiger Beat ads an interesting, um, addition:

BORDER PATROL IS HAVING TROUBLE HIRING, via Ted Hesson: “Shortly after taking office, the president signed an executive order that called for the hiring of 5,000 additional agents. More recently, his administration pushed a proposal that calls for 2,750 additional agents, law enforcement officers and staff. But Border Patrol can’t hire enough people even to fill jobs that were available before. Even as Congress provides funding to hire 21,370 agents, the patrol is more than 1,800 agents short of that mark.” POLITICO

Trump’s pocket Nazi, Stephan Miller’s spray-on hair must be falling out.

  2. Last week I drove from Alabama to Arizona, crossing down into some very remote parts of Texas along the way. If one drives along such roads (it has happened to me before, a few months prior) one encounters stops where all cars and trucks are forced off the road to a station of sorts.

It is at said inspection station that perhaps a drug sniffing dog circles your car. Sometimes you are forced to get out and have your entire person and vehicle inspected. Of course, if you are like me, a white 61 year old woman with her 22 year old white stepdaughter, driving a Prius, you just get waved through.

And you also see countless prowling CBP trucks along the landscape remote Route 90… There are your tax dollars at work.

The border is its own unique place, a wall will make a mess.

“Beds”, this is about “beds”? It has become a child trafficking ring, I honestly believe now.
It is bad enough that the contractors make $775. per person but now they sell off the kids too?
This is not a game of “limbo”, we have gone too low already.
Can’t anyone put a stop to this, or at least “follow the money”?
