Abuse of Faith 20 years, 700 victims: Southern Baptist sexual abuse spreads as leaders resist reforms

“It’s not just a recent problem: In all, since 1998, roughly 380 Southern Baptist church leaders and volunteers have faced allegations of sexual misconduct, the newspapers found. That includes those who were convicted, credibly accused and successfully sued, and those who confessed or resigned. More of them worked in Texas than in any other state.

“They left behind more than 700 victims, many of them shunned by their churches, left to themselves to rebuild their lives. Some were urged to forgive their abusers or to get abortions.

“About 220 offenders have been convicted or took plea deals, and dozens of cases are pending. They were pastors. Ministers. Youth pastors. Sunday school teachers. Deacons. Church volunteers.

“In 2007, victims of sexual abuse by Southern Baptist pastors requested creation of a registry containing the names of current and former leaders of Southern Baptist churches who had been convicted of sex crimes or who had been credibly accused. That didn’t happen; the last time any such list was made public was by the Baptist General Convention of Texas. It contained the names of eight sex criminals.

“Nearly 100 are still held in prisons stretching from Sacramento County, Calif., to Hillsborough County, Fla., state and federal records show. Scores of others cut deals and served no time. More than 100 are registered sex offenders. Some still work in Southern Baptist churches today.”

And it goes on from there.

Now, I’m not saying that all the Baptist preachers are child molestors any more than I would say all the Catholic Priests are child molestors, or any other such correlation. But I will note that the Southern Baptists have been one of the most consistently Republican,  pro-Trump sects, and are virulent opponents of LGBTQ people and issues, and of course women’s autonomy, and you can connect whatever dots you want to connect.

The word you seek is “projection.”

  1. This is where honest governments would remove all tax-exempt statuses from churches displaying this level of corruption and sexual abuse.
The Southern Baptists, the Catholic Church, any of them, any of them caught like this destroying lives in violation of EVERYTHING our faith should stand for. Cut off their tax-exempt status on all properties. See how fast they’ll reform themselves (or see how fast they run off with the church money).
These aren’t churches. These are criminal conspiracies. GOD DAMN THEM.

    Let’s do some math.
700 victims and 380 accused – 1.8 victims per accused, or fewer than 2 victims each.
700 victims and 220 convicted or took plea deals – 3.2 victims per accused, or fewer than 4 victims each.
Does anyone else find this low of a body count likely?
Disclosure: I grew up in the land of Bundy, who confessed to 30 murders. My idea of likely victim to abuser ratios may be skewed.

Child sexual abuse would seem to correlate with conservative fundamentalism. The Hasidic community has also been riddled with child abuse and coverup allegations. I suspect it’s a toxic mix of authoritarianism, patriarchy, and a purity obsession that results in these horrors.

Better to live among the rowdy than the holy… it’s safer.

Besides the more reasonable inhibitions there’s the fact that it often doesn’t go well if you mess with a rowdy person. It’s the “do as I do” thing, with standing up for yourself as one of the basic tenets of the average rowdy group.

Nor does anyone — the point is that those churches as institutions have consistently and as a matter of decades-long policy acted to shield abusers and silence victims.

Not all their priests and preachers are criminals, but the Catholic and Southern Baptist churches are criminal organizations.

Some were urged to get abortions? I can see the abortion laws need to be updated:

Abortion is illegal except in case of a threat to the woman’s physical health, rape or incest, life endangerment, fetal abnormality or sexual misconduct by church leaders and volunteers.

    Wake up Murka.
