Nicked At Night

Last night, a lot of testicle-having Americans (including Ben Shapiro, who knew?) were upset with Gillette’s upcoming Super Bowl Ad:

Shorter message: don’t be an asshole. Don’t raise your boys to be assholes.

The commercial raises good points, but the back-lash reaction to it was predictable  involving telling Gillette to shut-up and make razors, switching brands, men flushing Gillette razors down the toilette (and that’s gonna be interesting to snake out), blaming elites, and of course blaming women. The backlash came from Possum Hollar and Possum Hollar wannabes.

Again, who knew Ben Shapiro shaved?

What’s interesting to me is that this is one of those moments where people self-sorted: we found out who our allies are and who are jerks.

This response in support of the message was pretty spot-on:

There’s not a one-size fits all definition of masculinity, but there is behavior that is unacceptable.

    Flushing razors down toilets, eh? Shooting at them the way doofii shot at coolers is tougher since razors are smaller targets.

    Two amazing videos. Thank you so much, TG because the commercial and the followup are thoughtful looks at an ongoing crisis. I’ll be contacting corporate headquarters for Gillette to send my approval. Like Penzey’s, a major company can make a statement about humanity and kindness and goodness and we can reward them for taking a stand.

    Like the guy said, if you’re a man and you’re outraged or offended by that ad, then you need to ask yourself why.

      Chris has been a YouTuber for a long while; he takes complicated issues about acceptance very seriously, and is very upfront about his own insecurities (he has a lot of body-acceptance issues himself, for instance). His channel is one that is worth watching.

    What was it someone once said, about there’s no such thing as “bad exposure?” it’s all just PR, and if these “nattering nabobs of negativism” want to walk the razor’s edge (see what I did there?), then it just adds to the brand, which has been around since 1903, and I think Gillette will survive these spurious attacks.

    I just read a super long description of some woman’s dad. He’s wonderful, he’s thoughtful, he detests bullies and calls them out, he reads his bible every night looking for ways to be better, etc, etc, etc. And then she showed him this ad and he let it go, like, 20 seconds and told her “Turn it off, I’ve been insulted enough.”
    Apparently it is an on/off thing in some people’s minds. If you call out men for being nasty you must be talking about ALL men. Even the format of the ad was objected to. Why did they show nothing but bad behavior from men in the first part? Obviously, Gillette is trying to say all men are like this. You’d think they never saw a commercial before, or read a short story, or even read the bible. (it’s the story setup, they got 2 minutes to make their point, come on!)

    So far I’ve noticed that the guys who really have a problem with MeToo, or even the Empathetic Tone Police who style themselves as allies, are living in this world where everything is about men all the time. Technically, they’re not wrong, but they don’t actually think there’s something wrong with that.
