Where is Dr. Thompson When We Need Him?

We could use a writer like Thompson again

Poppy still has not risen; so much for the second coming. The hagiography for a war criminal is enough to gag a maggot.

Axios morning email thingie is heaped with maudlin pablum about the memorial service and I liked the bit about how Poppy will be put in a baggage car when he arrives in Texas, and they will choo-choo him in a circle so that the locals can gape at him.

Anyway, I thought a reading of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson’s eulogy of Richard Nixon (He Was A Crook) is appropriate for today. There just is not muscular prose like this any more, and it is a shame that our political press is so predictably bland. Imagine what he would write about Bush?

Thanks for the link. Great piece!

    My favorite line:
” If the right people had been in charge of Nixon’s funeral, his casket would have been launched into one of those open-sewage canals that empty into the ocean just south of Los Angeles. He was a swine of a man and a jabbering dupe of a president. “

A congressman who attended an afternoon soiree with VP Nixon as honored guest was overheard whispering to an acquaintance, “My god – the man has 5-o’clock shadow at 1 in the afternoon!” One of my fondest remembrances of the man.

Thanks, TG. The good Doctor could really turn a phrase. My favorite: “Nixon was so crooked that he needed servants to help him screw his pants on every morning.” Masterful.
