The most extensive plot to kill Democratic US government officials and prominent Americans in US history happened yesterday. This is a day to tell the kids and the grandkids about, someday. It’s astonishing.
The plot targeted two former presidents, their families, a former Secretary of State, a former head of the CIA, a former Attorney General, and senior members of Congress, a leading media organization & one of America’s most distinguished philanthropists. All of the packages falsely listed the South Florida offices of Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) as a return address.
The assassination attempts involved the coordinated distribution of deadly explosive devices across the country and was only foiled through the intervention of America’s top law enforcement agencies:
- Secret Service intercepted the Obama and Clinton packages.
- Capitol Police intercepted one of Rep. Maxine Waters’s TWO packages at a congressional mail facility in Maryland.
- A courier delivered the package meant for Brennan to CNN’s New York headquarters, CNN quickly evacuated on live TeeVee.
- The envelope meant for Holder was “returned” to Wasserman Schultz’s offices.
This wasn’t a threat of bombings, these were bombings that were stopped in the nick of time, and the intended victims were Trump’s political enemies. If this massive assassination attempt had been successful, we would be in the aftermath of the Shock Doctrine written large. This would have been as impactful as 9-11, but only with domestic terrorists as the perps.
No one knows who sent the packages (whom the Twitters dubbed #MAGAbomber) and why. Trump’s Media supporters (the usual suspects, including Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, Candace Owens, and Michael Flynn Jr.) insist these incidents are part of a liberal hoax, a false flag operation.
Trump backers who have suggested the bombs are a liberal hoax:

These garbage people have convinced Possum Hollar that this is all “fake news” about “fake bombs.”
And speaking of terrible people Axios Alerts email thingie, just now tells us what staff-banging, serial adulterer Noot thinks about this:
Speaking at an Axios event in Washington Thursday, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich said that Trump’s attacks on the media as “the enemy of the people” don’t help improve the American political divide, but that he thinks “they’ve earned it.”
The big picture: Gingrich claimed the toxicity of the current political climate is “everyone’s fault,” pointing to social media and the “tribalization” of cable news — specifically CNN — as some of the main factors. When asked why there was such a quick move on the right to call yesterday’s mail bombs a conspiracy, Gingrich answered, “Because it’s October.”
“Because it’s October” is probably the most laughably cynical thing Noot could have said, considering it is the Republican Party that has been the purveyor of the October Surprise, from Nixon, Saint Ronnie, all the way up the Comey email investigation just days before the 2016 Goat Rodeo, the GOP’s greatest hits always happen in October.
At a rally in Wisconsin last night (no, he did NOT cancel, nor did he call Obama or Clinton to check in with his fellow presidents), Prznint Stupid followed a message of unity with an attack:
“The media … has a responsibility to set a civil tone and stop the endless hostility and constant negative and oftentimes false attacks.”
…so he couldn’t stay on his own message.
CNN Worldwide President Jeff Zucker said in an extraordinary statement for a news executive:
“There is a total and complete lack of understanding at the White House about the seriousness of their continued attacks on the media.”
And speaking of CNN, the Reliable Sources email is especially compelling as Brian Stelter relates what happened in CNN (too long to blockquote it):
Walking into the scene of a news story
Tom Kludt emails: “I spent my morning commute reading the breaking news about explosives that were sent to the Clintons and Obamas. I arrived at our building to find a small but growing contingent of police officers, along with a few colleagues who had been stymied at the door. It’s weird to say, but I pretty much knew right away that they were related. The news I had been reading was suddenly right in front of me…”
I was in Philly this morning, so I first learned about the security situation when “Reliable Sources” EP Jon Auerbach texted me and said “we’re evacuating.” Here’s how it happened:
Around 9:30: That’s when the package was delivered to the WarnerMedia mailroom, according to a source.
10: Per the Citizen app, NYPD units were dispatched to the scene.
10:04: Word of an evacuation at the Whole Foods in Time Warner Center. The mailroom and the Whole Foods are both on the basement level.
10:07: Staffers like Kludt were stopped at the door.
10:09: An alarm went off at CNN’s New York offices, signaling an evacuation. Poppy Harlow and Jim Sciutto were anchoring from the fifth floor newsroom set. They asked a question to a remote guest, Tom Fuentes, which gave them a moment to size up the situation.
10:10: “There’s a fire alarm here,” Harlow said. “We’ll be right back,” Sciutto said, tossing to a commercial break.
10:11: Oliver Darcy writes: “As I was walking by on my way toward the exit stairs, I overheard Sciutto say in a very serious voice to someone, ‘We need to leave.’ For whatever reason, hearing Sciutto say that the way he did conveyed the seriousness of the situation.”
10:12: In the show’s Atlanta-based control room, executive producer Michelle Moryc lined up correspondent Rene Marsh, who was standing by for a live shot in the DC bureau, to sub anchor.
10:13: Also in the DC bureau, Shimon Prokupecz was on his phone, gathering info about the situation at TWC.
10:15: CNN came back from commercial. “The Time Warner building in New York City has been evacuated,” Marsh said.
10:19: Sciutto called into the newscast via phone while technicians set up a Skype video signal.
10:25: Harlow and Sciutto rejoined the newscast via Skype.
UPDATE 1: More bombs: Joe Biden got two bombs and Robert De Niro one (so far)
