UPDATED: ka-BOOM! Comrade Trump Gets a 1-2 Punch

Axios sends us the hightlights from a very unusual anonymous NYTimes editorial:

History in front of your eyes: The New York Times published an unprecedented anonymous op-ed today by a senior Trump administration official who claims membership in an effort to actively undermine the president.

Why it matters: It’s not normal for the Times to publish an anonymous staffer bagging on the president — and the fact that the Times permitted anonymity suggests they’re taking this person’s words seriously.

  • Between the lines: It’s also worth taking a deep breath. There are hundreds of officials who could be labeled “senior official in the Trump administration.” (The Times knows the staffer’s identity and is keeping it secret to protect that person’s job.)

From the op-ed:

  • “We want the administration to succeed and think that many of its policies have already made America safer and more prosperous.”
  • “But we believe our first duty is to this country, and the president continues to act in a manner that is detrimental to the health of our republic.”
  • “That is why many Trump appointees have vowed to do what we can to preserve our democratic institutions while thwarting Mr. Trump’s more misguided impulses until he is out of office.”

The big picture: “[S]uccesses have come despite — not because of — the president’s leadership style, which is impetuous, adversarial, petty and ineffective.”

  • “Astute observers have noted… that the rest of the administration is operating on another track, one where countries like Russia are called out for meddling and punished accordingly, and where allies around the world are engaged as peers rather than ridiculed as rivals.”
  • “This isn’t the work of the so-called deep state. It’s the work of the steady state.”

The bottom line: “Given the instability many witnessed, there were early whispers within the cabinet of invoking the 25th Amendment… But no one wanted to precipitate a constitutional crisis.”

  • “[W]e will do what we can to steer the administration in the right direction until — one way or another — it’s over.”
  • “The bigger concern is not what Mr. Trump has done to the presidency but rather what we as a nation have allowed him to do to us. “

Be smart: Trump already feeds on “Deep State” conspiracy theories. This is unprecedented ammunition for Trump’s fiercest defenders to send him over the top.

UPDATE 1: The Stable Genius responds:

“Anonymous. Can you believe it? Anonymous. Meaning gutless. A gutless editorial.”

Hey Whitehouse staffer, who’s the crazy one?
Hey Whitehouse staffer, who’s your Bossman?

I liked but didn’t love it. I disliked his (let’s say the author is male) implying that Trump alone is the problem, an aberration we don’t deserve and couldn’t see coming. Whereas in fact Trump is the full fruit and flower of 40 years of GOP politics, and his Republican enablers are just as much to blame for this nightmare–tf not more. They could stop it in a day, if they wanted.

    • They could, but hey, they’re getting what they want for now. Look at what this staffer claims are ‘victories’ by the administration. Look at the absolute farce of a “hearing” going on in the Senate right now.

They’re getting their Gilded Age Lochner Court back. They’re going to flat repeal the New Deal, and they’re going to blow up the world because they think they can scrape a few more dollars out of it for their insatiable greed.

I read it as “We know he should not be in office, but we’re getting what we want, so we’re keeping him as a convenient puppet. Putin isn’t the only one who can pull his strings.”

  3. Stuffing the courts with fascists, corporate toadies and reactionaries, deregulation leading to more air pollution water pollution, blowing up international trade, a tax cut designed to add a trillion dollars to the deficit, and adding billions to military spending for things like Space Pants Farce are NOT WINS FOR THE COUNTRY, THEY’RE WINS FOR YOUR PALS THE 0.01%

So fuck off “brave resister”, I hope the Orange Turd finds out who you are.

    I so agree with brucedesertrat.
Anyone else wondered, while reading the op-ed…maybe ‘they’ are hoping to instigate an impeachment proceeding to get Pence in place? It would add the theocracy part to the rest of the nightmare.
Just a thought…so much at play here. Dangerous play.

Well, now we can all rest easy knowing that some unknown person or persons is/are there to make sure all the tax cuts, deregulation and rightwing judicial nominees get through, while the REALLY STUPID and CATASTROPHIC things the lunatic criminal sitting in the Offal Office wants to do are ‘usually’ thwarted! Guess Mueller might as well wrap up, go home and shitcan that report of his along with any further indictments, impeachment referrals, etc. It’s also OK if Comrade Stupid fires Sessions, Rosenstein, whomever, because again, the anonymous ones will save us for more of the same so-called policies that we are thriving so well under. Nothing to see here after all, it will all be over very soon, and thank you, thank you intrepid secret person and the brave NY Times for letting us all know.

The anonymous op-ed is nothing without a name. The medium is the message. The New York Times will be their lifeboat.

Yeah, I keep thinking about this being a lifeboat, too. I’m not sure that the entire GOP will be able to fit, so it might really be only an escape pod from the White House Death Star?
