UPDATED: The Blue Wave Is Wearing Pussy Hats (About Last Night…)

Yesterday’s elections had something unusual going on of which we sort of alluded to the other day. Tuesday’s contests had (I think) about 50 women on the ballots running for Congress or for their state’s governor’s mansion!

Which is impressive all on it’s own! And methinks the Blue Wave is turning Pink!

(The Politico Women Candidate Tracker has not yet been updated, so expect updates at some point!) Also, too: Gender Watch has updates!

It was a strong night for women. Let’s jump in it!

Kansas:

  • Laura Kelly (D) won the primary for Governor
  • The other elections are still too close to call

Michigan:

  • Gretchen Whitmer (D) won her primary for governor, Gretchen Whitmer will lead Michigan’s first all-female statewide ticket!
  • Debbie Stabenow (D) won her primary for re-election to the U.S. Senate.
  • Seven (and possibly as many as nine) of the state’s 14 house districts.
  • Rashida Tlaib (D) has won the Democratic nomination to run unopposed for a House seat, setting her up to become the first Muslim woman elected to Congress. (AP)

Missouri:

  • Claire McCaskill (D) won her primary for re-election to the U.S. Senate
  • Two women advanced to the primary for State offices

Washington:

  • Maria Cantwell (D) won her primary for re-election to the U.S. Senate
  • Susan Hutchison (R) won her primary for the opportunity to lose to Cantwell in November. (See what I did there?)
  • Pramila Jayapal (D) won her primary for re-election to the U.S. Congress
  • Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R) won her primary for re-election to the U.S. Congress (she is the #4 Republican in the house and she led Democrat Lisa Brown by less than 1 percentage point Tuesday night!)
  • Five women Democrats won their primaries for state house seats
  • One woman candidate holds a narrow lead over a man.

We keep saying it: the Republican’s War on Women is driving a lot of elections this year, women are kicking ass and taking names.

UPDATE 1: Axios –

“There are now at least 172 women nominees for U.S. House and 11 women nominees for governor — the highest in history, per the Center for American Women and Politics,” Axios’ Alexi McCammond reports.

The Reich Wing will freak out about anyone who is not a straight white male Xristian having any power. I don’t think it will be more-or-less than when the Kenyan Usurper was running things.

My ideal candidate: Smart, Female, Democratic, Liberal, Atheist. We’ve probably had these candidates in the past but they tend to keep the atheist part to themselves.
