Somewhere, Scott Pruitt is Smiling

The Fourth Reich wants to get rid of The Kenyan Usurper’s aggressive fuel economy targets for cars and trucks, which is an action that they readily, nay PROUDLY admit will result in more pollution harmful to people’s health.

But the fossil-fuel fetishists claim that there is an upside! An improvement in vehicle and highway safety! Let’s look!

NYTimes tells us…

The Trump administration on Thursday put forth its long-awaited proposal to freeze anti-pollution and fuel-efficiency standards, significantly weakening one of President Barack Obama’s signature policies to combat global warming . . . The plan, jointly published by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Transportation Department, would roll back a 2012 rule that required automakers to nearly double the fuel economy of passenger vehicles to an average of about 54 miles per gallon by 2025. It would halt requirements that automakers build cleaner, more fuel-efficient cars including hybrids and electric vehicles.

The Fourth Reich is trying to claim that it is an attempt to save 12,700 lives over a decade , and as Scissorhead MDavis wryly observed it is like Trump U trying to apply the Laffer Curve to auto safety:

To support this claim, the proposal makes three main arguments. First, people who buy fuel-efficient vehicles will end up driving more, increasing the odds that they will get into a crash. Second, the fuel-efficient vehicles will themselves be more expensive, slowing the rate at which people buy newer vehicles with advanced safety features. Third, automakers will have to make their cars lighter in response to rising standards, slightly hurting safety.

Opinions Differ!

You might be surprised to learn that environmental advocacy organization and many outside scientists dispute that reasoning. They say that Comrade Trump’s proposed regulations—which even automakers are wary of—would contribute to global warming.

Prznint Stupid also is looking to take away California’s power to set its own, tougher standards and its electric vehicle mandate, because, you know, States Rights, Bitchez!!1!

There is always the marketplace. If we can use it against them, by insisting on high fuel performance vehicles, tRump’s administration’s notion won’t mean shit.

That’s why they are attacking states’ ability to regulate efficiency and emissions- California is populous enough to force auto makers to adhere to the state’s high standards nationwide.

These are the arguments that will gin up the value of my stock in Amalgamated Buggywhips, Inc!!! I do look forward to selling the stock at a handsome profit and only paying a pittance in taxes when adjusted for inflation (based on the 1897 original sale price). I might also point out that very few people died in buggy accidents in 1897!

First, I see no reason why people would drive significantly greater distances in a more fuel efficient car. Second, new technology usually is more expensive but it doesn’t take long for it to become old technology and the price drops. Third, if EVERYBODY is driving around in lighter cars then that should slightly increase safety.

(Sigh) Disingenuous administration is being disingenuous.
