OK, on one level Sacha Baron Cohen’s new show is very funny—his character anti-terrorism expert Erran Morad is so over the top—it is hard to believe anyone could fall for it. But fall for it they did. From Rep Dana Rohrabacher, South Carolina’s Rep. Joe ‘You Lie!’ Wilson, and former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott—amongst the more notable Republicans—they completely believe the premise and agree to support arming kiddies in a program called “Kinderguardians.”
And then there is Larry Pratt from the Gun Owners of America, red-faced, tears running down his cheeks laughing about rape.
At some level they all knew that they were being recorded, heck, they even agreed to record PSAs for arming toddlers with guns… and mortars (not surprisingly uttered by the always smarmy Joe Walsh). But not to worry, they did not advocate arming children under three because “they don’t call them the terrible twos for nothing.”
I felt ashamed that I was laughing and then realized it was not because it was funny, it was because it was so surreal and shocking my mind didn’t know how to process it.
