The current talking points about right-wing Kevin Williamson being martyred for thought crimes and having his Free Speech stripped away by Liberal Fascism is really taking on a life of its own.
Notorious plagiarist Mr. Meghan McCain, er, Ben Domenech, is raising the defense at The Federalist:
“This story is a predictable continuation of the left’s ownership not just of media but indeed of all institutions…. Eich, Damore, Williamson and others are subject to blacklists and HR reports and firing in every arena of industry and culture. If you have wrongthink, you will not be allowed for long to make your living within any space the left has determined they own – first the academy, then the media, then corporate America, and now the public square.”
If one thinks that suggesting that women who have abortions should be executed (seriously!), then one is a terrorist. That is beyond (regrettable) public square misogyny, and is Christian Terrorism (I’m adding Christian because what is notable about all these men rising to Williamson’s defense are their Christian theocratic beliefs).
Now, no one has written a law that now makes Williamson unemployable, so no: his Free Speech is not taken away. Williamson can continue to say whatever extreme theocratic nonsense he wants, but he has to own the blow-back for saying it, which includes getting fired.
And Ben, you know something about being fired. And you know that there will be another wingnut welfare job for Williamson elsewhere; maybe the Koch Brothers who allegedly keep The Federalist afloat can find a desk for him, just as they did for you.
Arguing that Williamson has the right to publish his heinous, misogynistic, women-killing beliefs in The Atlantic takes away editorial agency from them. Williamson does not have a right to do that any more than Dan Savage has a right to publish in The Federalist.
If you are saying we should just have a conversation about executing women for having an abortion, then I could just as easily say we should have a conversation about executing Republicans for being traitors. Yours is an intellectually dishonest position, Ben, and even you know it.
