“President Trump wants to sign a presidential proclamation tomorrow to set his steel and aluminum tariffs in motion, according to two senior administration officials…
“Yes, but: Keep in mind that this is what Trump has been telling staff he wants. These days — and in this White House — nothing is set in stone. Besides, the White House lawyers have been working overtime on these tariffs and sources tell me nothing is certain when it comes to timing.”
So really, what’s the rush?
“Next Tuesday’s looming Pennsylvania election could be pushing Trump to act quickly, given that the race is taking place in industrial steel and coal strongholds in the southwestern corner of the state. Trump’s preferred candidate Rick Saccone is struggling against Democrat Conor Lamb. Senior Republicans on the Hill and inside the administration are nervous and pessimistic about this race in a district they really ought to win.”
He is going to go full-on, balls-out, hammer-down, mad-monkey, terrordome crazy for Rick Saccone in PA-18?
Tiger Beat on the Potomac (thanks Charlie!) morning email thingie tells us something about that Pennsylvania election we had not considered: due to the gerrymandering case, PA-18 (as we know it today) goes away before the 2018 Pie Fight:
“REPUBLICANS HAVE SPENT MORE THAN $9 MILLION ON A HOUSE DISTRICT THAT WILL DISAPPEAR IN EIGHT MONTHS: THE NRCC just dropped another $619,664 into Pennsylvania 18 to boost Rick Saccone, the Republican candidate who many in the party think is a complete dud.”
Sweet baby Jeebus at a smelting plant! He’s going to crash the economy to save a seat that ceases to exist in 8 months? I am not finding polling to see how Saccone and Lamb are doing today (last I checked Lamb was ahead but within the margin of error and this is a district that went heavily for Trump in the Goat Rodeo, so it looks a like a big upset no matter who wins), but this is nuts.
