The Russian Usurper is a Gun-Grabber, Who Knew?!

We’re gonna lead the morning with the startling news that stable genius and woebegone dotard Prznint Stupid is a gun-grabber, something the Kenyan Usurper was often accused of being, but never got around to doing. Take it away, NYTimes:

“In a remarkable meeting, the president veered wildly from the N.R.A. playbook in front of giddy Democrats and stone-faced Republicans. He called for comprehensive gun control legislation that would expand background checks to weapons purchased at gun shows and on the internet, keep guns from mentally ill people, secure schools and restrict gun sales for some young adults.

“He even suggested a conversation on an assault weapons ban. At one point, Mr. Trump suggested that law enforcement authorities should have the power to seize guns from mentally ill people or others who could present a danger without first going to court. ‘I like taking the guns early,’ he said, adding, ‘Take the guns first, go through due process second.’”

Remember these two numbers: 60 and 218. Very little of what he said would have the 60 votes it needs in to pass the Senate, and 218 votes it needs to get through the House. And just to be clear, the opposition would mostly be from the Republicans: 87% of gun control bills were introduced by Democrats, and 98% of gun rights bills by Republicans.

Tiger Beat on the Potomac (thanks Charlie!) had a depressing data-driven graphic up that shows all the gun legislation proposals in the past few years (gun control v. gun rights) and how many bills became laws. The odds are long.

I don’t often link out to The Rude Pundit, but I think his essay on the Mass Shooting Generation is required reading. They give me hope that maybe this time we can beat the odds.

  1. Honestly I’m coming around to the concept that Trump should just be ignored. Reporting that trump said something wildly at odds with reality is like breathlessly reporting that the sun rose YET AGAIN in the East, confounding Flat Earth Experts who were certain that THIS TIME, it would rise in the West…

Trump says what he thinks will get him the most praise from his audience, period. Nothing about this is ‘leadership’ or ‘policy’ or anything like that. His all-consuming jones is getting attention paid to him period.

The only downside I could see to not paying him this attention is the likelihood that he’ll ratchet up the crazy, and that’s not good when he has access to nuclear weapons.

I pity that poor fucking officer designated to be the football carrier.

Yup. Every word you say is true, BDR. I tried for a while to skip it and pay attention to policy, but he has none.

A little off topic, I have my 93 year old mother living with me. She has long since given up on the Republican Party, but is still registered as a Republican. We were out at the hockey game last night when a Republican candidate called to beg donations. My readable voicemail transcribed it as “so we can help President Truck”.
Even my voicemail makes fun of the guy. AI is here.

I decided to check out Breitbart and Red State- some of the mouth breathers are talking impeachment. Best possible course: June impeachment of Trump by GOP congress, December impeachment of Pence by Democratic congress.

    A boy can dream, no?
