Somewhere, Wayne LaPierre is Screaming

I loved the passage where Dick’s Sporting Goods CEO Edward Stack said that they did everything by the book and yet somehow this still happened. And that is exactly the point.

This is a watershed moment, the biggest of the gun retailers say that they will gladly take a hit in the pocketbook rather than suffer the guilt of the next massacre. Does it solve the problem? No, but it is a step in the right direction. Will there be another mass shooting with an AR-15? Absolutely. But over time, the frequency might lessen.

If the Congress will not act (thanks a lot NRA!), more retailers should stand up. Thank you, Dick’s Sporting Goods.

Also/too: thank you, Parkland survivors. You are already making more of a difference than any of the generations that preceded you. Keep it up.

This is not the kind of silent majority the goopers are used to.

We don’t have a “Dicks Sporting Goods” anywhere near, but I’d show them some love if we did. They sell fishing and camping stuff besides guns and This stand on guns will cost them a bit. Time to at least give them some good reviews!

Big deal. They did a similar thing after Sandy Hook — it lasted less than a year.

“We are extremely saddened by the unspeakable tragedy that occurred last week,” said a statement the company issued Dec. 14, 2012, “and our hearts go out to victims and their families and to the entire community. Out of respect for the victims and their families, during this time of national mourning we have removed all guns from sale and from display in our store nearest to Newtown and suspended the sale of modern sporting rifles in all of our stores chainwide.”

    A noble sentiment. However:

But by Aug. 20, 2013, NBC News reported the company started selling them again.

So don’t be so quick to praise Dick’s Sporting Goods. They may very well start selling assault rifles as soon as your attention is diverted. Granted they said “suspended” instead of “discontinued”, but they re-initiated sales of AR15s at their Field & Stream stores. Maybe they’ll start a new subsidiary – is “Killer Joe’s” taken?

I read that, too. But in a televised press conference, the Dick’s owner said this time they won’t go back. Seeing a major retailer make a decision like this is a big deal, and since he promised to stick to it, we have to make sure he does. There are lots of protests now and we need to make sure these new promises are kept.

Did he say “…believe me..” like Trump does? Remember (in the real version of the proverb) “The proof of the pudding is in the eating.” Only time will show whether Dick’s can be trusted this time around.

Also, Thank You students. Proud of you!! So sorry it had to be under horrific circumstances. I agree that the more retailers find their conscience & stand up, that’s what might make some changes. The nra hates losing $$ just like congress.
