When Push Comes to Shove-It

Amply be-chinned Mitch McConnell

On Friday, Senate parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough went through the Senate’s Trickle-Down Healthcare Tax Cuts for Billionaires (tagline: “When Billionaires have more money, we all will feel better”)  and said there were chunks of amply be-chinned Mitch’s evil plan that cannot be done through reconciliation process, including:

  • defunding Planned Parenthood for one year
  • banning coverage of abortion in Obamacare insurance plans
  • killing cost-sharing subsidies, and imposing a six-month waiting period for new insurance enrollees

MacDonough has not (yet) ruled that the various pork being given to specific Senators for their votes—the Polar Payoff, Bayou Bailout, or Sunshine Sellout—would be allowed, either.

    Good to hear.

    Not celebrating yet.

But to quote Laura… So. Much. Winning.

If the Republicans are smart, they’ll take this as an opportunity to quietly drop the whole issue. Repeal-and-replace has become so unpopular in the polls that they might well face worse political consequences for keeping this promise than for breaking it.

Yes, Trump wants a win on something, anything, and the hard-core wingnuts would have to face the stark horror of seeing all those poor people keep their health insurance. But surely McConnell and co. realize they’re trying to commit political suicide for the sake of something almost nobody wants any more?

I don’t think they’ll quietly drop the whole thing. We just got an email from someone whose email address domain name apparently does not exist, posting an address that is an ad agency in El Segundo, subject line “Trumpcare is here! Change your insurance” along with a link to: here
