‘Wholly Appropriate Conversation’

Exciting News From the Trump Administration!

I just finished watching National Security Advisor Gen. McMaster’s press conference, in which he repeated the phrase “wholly appropriate conversation” to the point of it sounding like a catechism.

No matter what the question was, how finely parsed it was, the answer was wholly appropriate conversation. And of course, when asked if leaks like the WaPo story threatened national security, the answer was yes, but the details was just a wholly appropriate conversation.

Smarter people than I will no doubt have more things to say, but I’m going to have a wholly inappropriate conversation now.

  1. When the president does it, it means it isn’t illegal. Or something. But bulletpoint two is also awesome–he didn’t know where that information was from. There he goes, Leader of the US, so informed and prepared…not.

Um, he meant to say ‘wholly owned subsidiary’.

Applying the word “appropriate” to Shitler… Nope. No one in America is fooled. There are just the ones that know it’s bullshit, and the ones that know they have to pretend it isn’t bullshit.

Trump is pushing the boundaries of what he can get away with, and he’ll get away with this too, and the fuss it’s raised will be replaced with a new fuss over a new outrage soon enough.

It’s a fully established pattern now.

Almost weekly, like clockwork, comes another outrage very carefully calibrated to be just a little bit more outrageous than the previous one, but also carefully calibrated to be something which won’t make GOP support jump ship.

Trump’s still being underestimated, and that underestimation is being helped, even promoted, by every remark that refers to his “incompetence”.

If the task at hand is to slowly advance the agenda necessary to install an species of absolutely authoritarian plutocratic fascism by progressively hypnotizing the media and the citizenry into compliance with an ever-rising tide of outrageousness, then what we’re tempted to call “fuckups” are in fact very effective strategies and the very opposite of incompetent.

I’m really starting to worry now that he won’t be stopped this side of a complete dismantling of our political and legal architecture, simply because the institutions which have, on paper at least, the power to stop him are now systemically incapable responding appropriately.

Certainly Congress is not going to gallop to the rescue, I’m quite sure that Trump’s preternatural sense of the weakness (by reason of greed and power addiction etc) in others will serve him well in understanding how to pace his outrages.
That leaves the Judiciary. I’m not holding my breath there either.

    This is seriously fucked up.
