Mike Pence was the tie-breaking vote in March on new legislation that would allow individual states to decide how to spend family planning grants, which is to say in Jeebusland that they won’t give any money to Planned Parenthood (which might be the only family planning option in many places).
Hair Führer signed it into law yesterday, you know, during the distraction caused by the Mother of all Bombs.
Now that the rule has been repealed, states can effectively block Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers from funds associated with the Title X Family Planningprogram, which was established in 1970 to subsidize organizations that offer services related to contraception, pregnancy care, fertility and cancer screenings primarily for low-income people.
Anti-abortion activists cheered the move as a way to return some measure of discretion to states, which will now have the latitude they once did in deciding how to mete out Title X funds…
…Yet Title X has long been in the cross-hairs of conservative Republicans in Congress. Many see it as a vein of cash for Planned Parenthood, which many Republican lawmakers have vowed to defund entirely.
Expect to see an uptick in those Crisis Pregnancy Centers, where women get lectured to keep their rapists’ babies because Jeebus.
So while the Republicans were unable to strip healthcare from tens of millions of American (Oh, hai Paul Ryan!), they have been successful in making it more difficult for women to get the help that they need. And we should note for the record that federal money cannot go for abortion services AND that only about 3% of Planned Parenthood services are abortion related. So I guess we should also anticipate a drop in breast cancer screenings, as well.
So, besides punishing The Skirts, let’s see what else the 4th Reich has done for us:
