If you listen to his address (and I don’t blame you if you don’t) you might think Scott Pruitt holds an elected office and is trying to find a way to forge a reasonable compromise with other elected officials. But he’s not an elected office holder working on laws. He’s the director of an agency that is guided by laws to which they are held accountable.
The EPA has a mission statement which is “to protect human health and the environment — air, water and land.” That’s it. One simple sentence.
As you probably noted, compromise with industry—not even oil and gas—is mentioned as part of the EPA’s mission. Weird, huh?
Pruitt might think that he’s conning us into thinking he’s not a rigid conservative with an agenda, but actually he just convinced us that he is.
UPDATE: The LA Times sees the same thing.
