Misogyny Kills – UPDATED

Last night seven people died in the mostly sleepy student hamlet of Isla Vista (which is the off-campus community of UC Santa Barbara; I doubt that there are many people over the age of 30 there) in what appears to be another mass murder in which a crazy person had access to a gun:

It is chilling video to watch and I had to force myself to finish it.

This is allegedly the dude that killed those six people in Isla Vista, and when you listen to his unhinged rant against women you will see the true face of misogyny. He hates women and plans (planned?) to kill them. And someone sold him a gun.

Misogyny is different from sexism, and I think we conflate the two often. It seems nearly daily we find another example of a conservative making a sexist gaffe, and we point it out (with good humor, we hope); this is different. Misogyny is pathological.

Our condolances to the families and friends of his victims, and to all of Isla Vista.

UPDATE 1: There’s more. He left behind a 140-page manifesto.

It is an insane place to live, but college student do crazy things and what he did ( I suppose it would be PC to say “allegedly”) got him dead and was far beyond sanity.

May all of those in Ila Vista be able to get over this.

Reamus – I made the mistake of reading the comments on YouTube, too. Never, ever, read comments on YouTube (they are the worst), but these were especially horrific. Let’s just say that there are more misogynists in the world than one would think.

Didn’t click. Had a co-worker who was into the alpha male, beta male bullshit. Thank god they fired him years ago (allegedly for surfing porn while at work).

What stands out for me is his phony evil chuckle. It’s more chilling than a genuine evil chuckle.
I’m not a trained psychologist, but it seems obvious this kid had no sense of self-identity.

    • Agree absoloutely. When he did it the first time, I was like “WTF! Is he imitating Dr Evil?” but then when it reappeared three or so times, I realised he genuinely would not have been aware of the mimickry, and that it literally is a maniacal laugh…

My thoughts and condolence to those affected by this horrific act.

Elliot Rodgers seems to have been a conservative pattern card. He was white, wealthy, followed abstinence before marriage, owned a gun and thought it could solve insecurity problems. He appeared to think women were okay if they did just as he wished them to. If not, they should be punished.

However, unlike most conservatives, Elliot Rodgers had, according to his family, also been undergoing psychiatric care for his mental illness.

This tragic but sick fuck has prolly told this joke a thousand times: What do you call a girl who will fuck you? A slut.
You call one who won’t a bitch.

The first time some asshole in a bar told me this I thought about punching him.

I had a roommate in college who was a 21 year old virgin. He had written out a long diatribe similar to this, but at the end he turned it around about the positives in his life and the positive things he was accomplishing. I don’t know if I was supposed to read it or if he knew I read it. Not getting laid really messed with his head and it was always on his mind. He wasn’t violent though, just constantly disappointed and felt like the perpetual victim.

He ended up losing his V to an uber-Christian girl who was part of numerous on-campus ministries who was supposedly saving herself. I figure they were at the same speed sexually. I believe that roommate figured out it was actually himself that sucked and not everyone around him. He wasn’t a bad guy, just annoying.

My armchair internet psycho-analysis: I’d guess not too many guys liked him either. A lot of asshole in that video. I’m guessing he targeted women because if he mouthed off to guys he would have been popped in the face a few times. If a woman ever told him off or slapped his face, it would reinforce his beliefs. The dude in that video had other things going on his head other than just not getting laid. I’m not jumping on the mental illness bus here yet. I’m leaning toward affluenza.

      GRS –

I think you hit a big part of it.

I think money has a great deal to do with this; he clearly flashed a lot of money in his quest. I think that there is little doubt that he was a sociopath, and his sense of entitlement—if not his sense of godliness—is a result of being a rich kid. It seems he was seduced by his own self-worth. There is more than a little bit of racism/classism in his manifesto, too. His self-loathing at being mixed race is part of the tell, but not the whole thing. I’m sure that there will be more to come.

You got it TG. The conclusion that I’d like come out of this and other rampage killings is that the NRA crowd doesn’t lump this into the, “Well, he’s mentally ill. Case Closed.” It’s not that simple. This guy had a warped view of society not because of mental illness, but because of upbringing. He had issues, but I don’t feel it’s mental illness. There could have been some depression in there, but even if this guy wasn’t depressed, he still had warped world views. Calling him crazy let’s people sweep it under the rug.

I liken this Santa Barbara guy to the guys in Austin who crashed his plane into the IRS building. They’re not crazy. They know right from wrong. They feel society’s rules shouldn’t apply to them and feel unjustly wronged by some key demographic.

Santa Barbara’s family alerted authorities about things the guy was saying, but I wonder if they claimed he was unstable or mentally ill. They clearly saw him as a threat. I’ve read a few things where people tried to pin this on Aspergers. Again, I’m not so quick to lump this guy into the mental illness category.

I read something like this…’never argue with a stupid or crazy person, they will lower you to their level and beat you with their experience.’ I cannot watch the video…but crazy people are becoming prevalent…one can blame Reagan for closing all the mental hospitals?

MDavis – YouTube has been taking it down as fast as people everywhere are uploading it all over the place. It’s creepy, not graphic. I’m sure you can find it somewhere. I’m not going to try to find another source.
