General Manager’s Statement Regarding
LADWP Power Generation Assets in Arizona

“I want to make clear that we support the City position regarding the recent law enacted in Arizona and the resolution adopted by the Los Angeles City Council.

On any given day, we receive 20 – 25% of our power from two power plants located in Arizona: Navajo, a coal-fired plant, and Palo Verde, a nuclear plant.

We are part owner of both power plants, which are generating assets of the Department. As such, nothing in the City’s resolution is inconsistent with our continuing to receive power from those LADWP-owned assets.

I might add that, as the City’s Job Czar, I certainly would welcome any conventions or meetings that were going to be held in Arizona to come to Los Angeles. We have fantastic facilities and incomparable weather and we’d welcome them to the City of Angels.”

  1. Mr DeBakey says:

Next thing you know Beutner will be dumping electricity to create an artificial power shortage.

Jack Nicholson will play Beutner in the movie.

  2. Excellent response.

  3. Dimitrios says:

If nothing else, threatening to turn off LADWP’s own AZ-based generators shows how wretched Arizonistani officials are over details.

That too, should be important to convention planners — over and above boycotting their bigoted laws.

In other words: “Suck it bitches!”

  5. You’re right, Marge. Just like the time I could have met Mr. T in Arizona. The entire day I kept saying, “I’ll go a little later. I’ll go a little later.” And then when I got there, they told me he’d just left. And when I asked McCain if he would ever come back again, he said he didn’t know.

LADWP is not an entity to mess with. These are the guys who turned the entire Owens Valley into a lifeless dessicated desert to steal their water for the City of Los Angeles, destroying the lives of tens of thousands of people, and laughed and put their boot down even harder when the residents of the Owens Valley objected. They have more power — raw power, political power, police power, the works — than probably the entire state of Arizona. LADWP territory, along with a couple of other municipal utilities in California, were the *only* place that did not lose power when PG&E and Enron gamed the system for profit during “deregulation”. It does not surprise me that they dotted their i’s and crossed their t’s regarding their generation assets in Arizona, these people are seriously competent, ruthless, and utterly paranoid about potential threats to their turf. Clearly the turds in Arizona who ranted about cutting off LA’s power did not do their homework, or they would have realized that the only way they’re going to take out the power to LA is to illegally physically destroy the long-haul power lines from the plants to LA because a federal court (the only court with jurisdiction) would never agree to allow them to turn off the power from LADWP’s own power plants… and that kind of domestic terrorism would require more guts than these folks have. They talk big, but in actuality they’re craven cowards (which is why they’re so scared of brown-skinned people from Mexico).
