The 1970s must have been very strange. Offering a menthol cigar to a nearly topless woman playing a string instrument — did this situation happen often?

  1. AK has typically missed the bus. While it is not clear from the picture, you had to play viola. At least for the menthol Tip. English Ovals for oboists, and obviously Gauloises for the cor anglais.

  2. Aside from Charlotte Moorman (you youngsters can look her up on teh Googles), the only nearly-topless girls playing stringed instruments that *I* saw were all playing guitars. Lots of those, though, in the 60s and 70s.

    Violinists tuck their violin under their chin.

    Judging by where the only topless violinist I ever saw tucked her instrument, I didn’t know what to call her.
